Rubberway® Sidewalks

Rubberway Sidewalks, a patented flexible, porous rubber pavement system, provides a sustainable, environmentally friendly solution to cracked sidewalks.

Rubberway Sidewalks provide rapid, even drainage and filtration for stormwater management while allowing air, water, and nutrients to penetrate through to the subsoil to nourish tree and plant roots below ground. This porous, rubber sidewalk system encourages deep rooting of trees, reducing root heave and cracked sidewalks. Rubberway Sidewalks are a long lasting, low maintenance, safe, ergonomic, and non-slip choice for replacing cracked city sidewalks. Rubberway Sidewalks can be designed to curve around corners, down slopes, and can be installed directly over tree roots without damaging them or hindering growth.

Our System

Rubberway Sidewalk is a patented, two layer system. The base layer, fabricated from recycled rubber tires, is topped with a colored pure virgin rubber compound with UV resistance allowing for custom design options with a variety of colors to choose from.

Sub-base preparations vary by region and the requirements can be altered accordingly. The base layer is specified at a 1 - 1 1/2" thickness and the colored wear (top) layer is specified at a 1/2" thickness. Edging can be concrete, steel, or recycled plastic lumber board. For each layer, the rubber granules are mixed with our proprietary binder, poured, and troweled evenly, and allowed to cure for up to twenty four hours. A variety of colors are available for the wear layer, such as gray, beige, tan, terra cotta red, and more. Rubberway Sidewalk can easily be installed around obstacles and over slopes, mounds and contours.

Green Building & LEED

Rubberway Sidewalks, Tree Wells, Pervious Pavements and Softwalk Paths & Trails qualify for LEED credits in several areas:

 

1) Heat Island Effect

LEED Credit SSc7.1 - 2 points possible

This credit refers to products that contribute to a reduction of the "heat island effect" by affecting solar reflectance, thermal emittance, permeability and tree preservation. Rubberway Sidewalks, Tree Wells and Softwalk® Paths & Trails utilize our patented poured-in-place system which results in a seamless, attractive, resilient and durable surface in a variety of colors. In addition to its ability to easily follow curves and surface irregularities like mounds and hollows and to pour around obstacles such as fire hydrants, posts, trees and other obstacles, the system has a high degree of:

 

A. Permeability: Allows water penetration through the system which both irrigates and reduces run-off problems. Drains 75 gal/min/yd2

 

B. Reflectance: Lighter colors increase reflectance and reduce the absorption of heat. Light gray and beige have a solar reflectance index (SRI) value of 31 and reflectance of 42.

 

C. Thermal Emittance: The same range of colors affects the thermal emittance of the surface and can be selected for particular project requirements. Thermal emmitance of light gray and beige is .83.

 

D. Tree and Shrub Preservation: Rubberway was developed to provide a superior method of providing protection for tree roots and, by allowing water penetration, to greatly reduce the problems of root heave caused by water starvation – which often results in destruction of the tree. Trees can be left in place providing shade and retaining moisture.

2) Recycled Content

LEED Credit MRc4 - 2 points possible

Rubberway Sidewalks, Tree Wells and Softwalk Paths & Trails utilizes 100% recycled tires when all black crumb rubber is used. If a colored EPDM virgin rubber wear layer is used the recycled content without binder varies between 66-100%. When including the binder the total recycled content varies between 57-65%.

3) Regional Materials

LEED Credit MRc5 - 2 points possible

Rubberway systems in California utilize 100% locally manufactured or produced materials. Elsewhere in the USA, we use locally derived materials whenever they are available.

4) Storm Water Design

LEED Credits SSc6.1 and SSc6.2 - 2 points possible

Rubberway pervious pavement systems allow rain and other sources of water to penetrate through to the subsurface, not only reducing the volume of stormwater runoff, but also filtering the water and allowing it to recharge groundwater aquifers. This significantly reduces the amount of heavy metals, chemical, and other pollutants normally picked up and transported by stormwater flows.

5) Innovation in Design

LEED Credit IDc1 - 5 points possible

Rubberway is an innovative green building technology that offers a permeable, resilient, colorful, attractive, and durable surfacing solution utilizing recycled tires. The system is seamless, preventing warping, curling, and dislodging; non-linear, allowing it to follow curves, go around corners, and accommodate contour changes; and resilient, providing safe, comfortable traction, thus reducing liability damages from slipping or falling. Rubberway is lead-free, non-toxic, and uses no heavy metal content materials.
